Know what runs your organisation and who controls it

Almost every organisation runs on an estate nobody has written down. It lives in the heads of the people who built it, in a spreadsheet that stopped being accurate a year ago, and in a set of vendor invoices that finance understands better than engineering does.

That is tolerable right up until it isn't: an engineer leaves, an auditor asks a question, a service falls over and nobody is sure who owns it. Blueprint exists to make the estate a maintained artefact rather than a collective memory.

The cost of an undocumented estate is not felt evenly. It arrives all at once, usually on the day somebody leaves or somebody asks.
