Nanomaterial coatings to slow dust loss on solar panels
Dust accumulation costs solar installations a large share of their output here, and manual cleaning is the current answer.
Solar installations in dusty regions lose a significant portion of their output between cleanings. The usual response is a cleaning schedule, which costs labour and water and is often skipped.
Hydrophobic and photocatalytic coatings are well studied in the literature. What we have not found is honest field data from this climate: how long a coating survives real dust and harmattan conditions, whether the gain outlasts the cost, and whether any of it is practical to apply to panels already installed on a roof.
